A shrine for water and wind, in a village of rice fields

Suwa Shrine

Suwa Shrine stands within the village. Its deity, Takeminakata-no-kami, has long been worshipped across Japan with Suwa Taisha in Nagano as its head shrine.

The deity of Suwa is associated with water, wind, and the harvest. A shrine for Suwa in this rice-growing village beside the Ichikawa speaks of the lives and prayers of the people who farmed here.

It is not a grand shrine, but its annual festival returns every October 17, together with the harvest season and the rhythm of village life.
