The History of Misa

Misa, Ichikawa Town, Hyogo.
A rural village beside the Ichikawa River.
A place whose name carries the feeling of beautiful fields.

The name — “Misa”

The name Misa is written with characters that suggest beauty and a place. The village has long been shaped by fields, water, and the daily work of the people who live beside them.

The Edo period — Misa Village in Jinsai District

During the Edo period, Misa was a village in Jinsai District. The settlement grew around rice fields and the waterways that made life and farming possible.

The Meiji period — becoming part of Tsurui Village

In 1889, Misa merged with Sawa, Tsurui, Kanzaki, and Tanaka to become a district of Tsurui Village. In 1896, the surrounding districts became Kanzaki District, and village life continued through the changes.

The village guardian — Suwa Shrine

Suwa Shrine stands within the village. Suwa’s deity has long been associated with water, wind, and the harvest — a fitting guardian for a rice-growing settlement beside the Ichikawa.

From 1955 to today — a village of beautiful fields

In 1955, Tsurui merged with Amaji, Kawabe, and Seka to form Ichikawa Town. Misa remains a district of the town, with rice fields and a small post office changing with the seasons.
